The Ashland University volleyball team dropped a straight-set match at Saginaw Valley State on Saturday (Sept. 23), 25-23, 25-22, 25-23, at Hamilton Gymnasium.
The Eagles (8-5, 2-3 GLIAC) will return to Kates Gymnasium on Friday (Sept. 29) to defend their 19-match home winning streak. They will play Davenport at 7 p.m.
In Set 1, Ashland (8-5, 2-3 GLIAC) had a 21-18 lead, but it slipped away with a 3-0 run by the Cardinals (3-10, 2-3 GLIAC). The set was tied at 23 before Sarah Tabit finished with two straight kills for the hosts.
The Eagles out-hit the Cardinals in the second set, .222 to .150, but Saginaw came away with the win. In the third, AU trailed 24-21, but got consecutive kills by sophomore Shelby Woycik and redshirt-sophomore Michaela Ping to force an SVSU timeout. The match ended on the next play, though, with a service error.
Woycik led the Eagles with nine kills (.071) with Neal (.412), Cudworth (.375) and Ping (.353) adding eight each. Senior Melanie Aguayo had a match-high 19 digs and Woycik had 10.
Tabit recorded 14 kills (.229) and McKenzie Schuster chipped in 11 (.409). The Eagles out-hit the Cardinals for the match, .219 to .198.
