Here's something no one can ever take away from the 2013 volleyball team. They were the first Ashland team to take the court in the revamped Kates Gymnasium. They were also the first to post a win in the remodeled facility.
"The girls were excited to be here," said head coach Cass Dixon. "It was great. It was nice to have a first contest in the gym."
For the record, the Eagles defeated Lock Haven, 3-0 in a match that lasted 57 minutes. The Eagles won, 25-19, 25-18, 15-16.
This was Lock Haven's first loss of the season. The Eagles and Bald Eagles are both 4-1. Both teams will play three more times in this tournament. AU's next match is Friday night at 7 against Tusculum.
The Eagles never gave Lock Haven a chance to build any momentum. Two freshmen - Alli Cudworth and Casey Clark - continued to play well. Both played well a week ago at the Ferris State Bulldog Invitational. Against LHU, Cudworth had a team-high 17 kills and Clark had 13 kills and nine. Senior defensive specialist Marci Zegarac led the team with 18 digs. Setter Shelly DeHenning had 39 assists.
Ashland has used a number of newcomers through the first five matches of the season. It's not always easy to blend incoming recruits with a large nucleus of returnees like AU has. So far, that has not been an issue.
"Overall, we had a pretty good week of practice," said Dixon. "We've had, I guess you'd call them distractions with all the stuff in the gym. Sometimes we've handled those pretty well, sometimes not."
