Ashland Wrestling Headed To 39th Midwest Classic

A mid-season test set for Saturday (Dec. 16) and Sunday (Dec. 17) in Indianapolis awaits the No. 10-ranked Ashland University wrestling team.

The 39th annual Midwest Classic will feature 35 teams, 15 of which are ranked in the National Wrestling Coaches Association's Top 25.

"This year, it's going to be tougher than ever," head coach Josh Hutchens said. "There are new teams coming in and some really stacked weight classes."

Returning for the Eagles after having not competed through the first month of the season are redshirt seniors Bob Mason (141 pounds) and Jordan Murphy (184). Mason qualified for nationals when he last competed in 2016. Murphy is a two-time national qualifier and a 2017 All-American.

"It's nice to see how the team gets excited with them around," Hutchens said.

AU finished fifth of 38 teams last season, as five of its 10 wrestlers placed. All five went on to qualify for nationals.

The 2016 placers who will take the mat this weekend are senior Luke Cramer (ranked first at 197) and junior Deaken McCoy (10th at 285). Cramer earned fourth place and McCoy earned eighth.

"Guys that are able to place at this tournament generally have a good chance at qualifying for the national tournament," Hutchens said.

Senior J.J. Diven (149), juniors Sebastian Vidika (125) and Lawrance Dudgeon (12th at 133), and sophomores Garrett Hall (157), Bret Romanzak (third at 165) and Christian Price (10th at 174) round out the list of those competing for Ashland at the Midwest Classic.
