Eagle Women No. 1 In WBCA Poll Prior To GLIAC Play

Not only will Ashland University's women's basketball team be the only undefeated team in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference to start league play, the Eagles also will enter 2018-19 GLIAC action as the top team in NCAA Division II, as well.

In the latest Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division II Top 25 Coaches' Poll, released on Tuesday (Nov. 27) afternoon, Ashland (5-0) moved into the top spot for the first time this season. The Eagles received 23 of 24 first-place votes.

This week's WBCA poll extends Ashland's D-II coaches' poll record of regular-season weeks at No. 1 to 41, as well as the D-II poll's longest active streak in the top 10 in the regular season to 49. Ashland also has been in the top five for 34 consecutive regular-season polls, trailing only North Dakota State (38) and Seattle Pacific (37) on that all-time D-II poll list.

Last season, Ashland set the D-II poll record for most consecutive regular-season weeks at No. 1 with 28 (Dec. 12, 2016-March 6, 2018).

All-time in the D-II coaches' poll – preseason, regular season and postseason combined – Ashland has been in the top 25 on 89 occasions, in the top 10 73 times, in the top five 66 times, and ranked No. 1 43 times. The Eagles have been in the rankings 54 times in a row, in the top 10 48 times in a row, and in the top five 37 times in a row.

Ashland is joined in this week's WBCA poll by fellow GLIAC team Grand Valley State (T-16th).

Through Monday (Nov. 26), Ashland is the No. 1 team in Division II in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.96-to-1), and is second in the country in scoring offense (97.8 ppg.), scoring margin (plus-31.2 ppg.) and fewest turnovers per game (10.2).

The Eagles will begin GLIAC play on Thursday (Nov. 29) at 5:30 p.m. at Kates Gymnasium vs. Lake Superior State (3-2).
