Prior to Friday (March 8), Ashland University's softball team had gone nearly three full years since winning both games on the same day on its annual Florida Spring Break trip.
The Eagles broke that skid in impressive fashion on Friday, winning 4-0 over Hillsdale and recording a late come-from-behind 6-1 victory over Assumption. Ashland will go into its final day of the trip with a 9-5 record, the program's best mark after 14 games since 2015 (13-1).
In the victory over the Chargers, sophomore pitcher Laney Jones (3-2) recorded her first complete-game shutout of the young 2019 season. Jones allowed just two hits and walked five while striking out five.
Ashland scored the only runs it would need with a three-spot in the top of the fourth inning, with the big blow being a two-run single from senior center fielder Erika Farst. Senior right fielder Halle Dorko had two of the Eagles' eight hits in the victory.
The victory against the Greyhounds saw Ashland come back from a 1-0 deficit through 5½ innings. Senior first baseman Kylie Asmus and junior designated player Dayna Denner each rapped two-run singles in the bottom of the sixth.
Ashland will conclude its annual Florida spring trip on Saturday (March 9) vs. Urbana at 9:15 a.m. and against Edinboro at 11:15 a.m.
