Eagles Finish Fifth In GLIAC In First Season

In its first season since 1995, Ashland University's men's tennis team finished fifth in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference following a 4-1 win on Saturday (April 27) over Lake Superior State.

The Eagles' already-impressive campaign was capped with a victory.

"Today, the guys really came together and were determined to compete hard with a lot of heart," said Ashland head coach Lexi Bolesky. "It was a great accomplishment to finish with a win and move up a spot in the conference."

AU came out on fire in doubles play again, picking up wins at No. 2 and 3. The freshman combo, Stuart Brdicka and Colten Clark, at had no trouble at No. 2, winning 6-1. It was more of the same for the other freshman duo, Tche Kun Teng and Jordan Phelps, winning 6-3.

With the 1-0 lead after doubles, Ashland only needed three wins in singles. The Eagles got that from their top three singles players. Junior Priyank Soni, Brdicka and Clark all won in straight sets.

Soni, at No. 1 singles, won his match quickly, 6-2, 6-3. Brdicka also was clinical in his victory, a 6-2, 6-2 result. Clark had to grind out both of his set wins at No. 3 singles to secure the win for the Eagles. He won both sets 7-5, 7-5.

The Eagles finished the season with a 13-12 overall record.

Bolesky said, "The future is bright for these young men and our new men's tennis program."
