Three days after earning Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference South Division Player of the Week honors, Ashland University sophomore third baseman/left fielder J.P. Sorma picked up the Division II National Hitter of the Week award from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) on Thursday (April 21).
Sorma, in the midst of a breakout season, had a breakout week in six games at home against Lake Erie and at Hillsdale last week. He was 15-for-25 (.600) five home runs, five doubles, 14 RBIs and 12 runs scored.
Sorma leads the GLIAC with 11 home runs, and is tied for the conference lead with 39 RBIs.
Ashland's baseball team (23-12 overall, 14-2 GLIAC, 10-0 GLIAC South Division) will return to South play on Saturday (April 23) and Sunday (April 24) for a four-game set at Walsh (18-18/9-7/6-4).
