The Ashland University baseball team locked horns with a stubborn Walsh baseball team on Saturday (Mar. 30) in North Canton, Ohio. AU won the first game of a GLIAC doubleheader, 5-1. The Cavaliers rebounded to win the second game, 5-3.
On Friday, the Cavaliers (11-8) ended Ashland's winning streak at eight games with a 5-4 win in nine innings.
In Saturday's first game, the Eagles got another masterful pitching performance from senior Eric Vaughan (Delta, Ohio/Owens C.C.). Vaughn, now 4-0, pitched a complete game, allowing a run on five hits. He walked three and struck out four.
Outfielder Alex Sortwell (San Mateo, Calif./Canada College) drove in two runs with a pair of sacrifice flies. Shortstop Austin Walts (Amherst, Ohio/Amherst-Steele) had a run-scoring single and scored another run on a steal of home. Catcher John Broll (Mississagua, Ont./Genesee C.C.), in the midst of a torrid week at the plate, had an RBI double.
Tyler Gray (Plain City, Ohio/Jonathan Alder) was 2-for-4.
The loss went to David Roper, who allowed five runs - two earned - in 5.2 innings. Roper walked four and struck out three.
Ashland had five hits in the second game. The loss went to starter Zach Botjer (Deshler, Ohio/Sinclair C.C.). In six innings, the senior allowed five runs (one earned) on 10 hits. Botjer walked three and struck out five.
No Ashland player had more than one hit.
