The Ashland University wrestling team may have hit its stride at the right time, as the Eagles took down the 15th-ranked Tiffin Dragons by a 21-8 final on Senior Night in Kates Gymnasium on Friday (Feb. 12).
The Eagles recognized seven members who were part of their last home dual meet of their careers.
"This was a very emotional dual meet," said senior 197-pounder Joe Brandt. "Throughout the season we haven't been firing on all cylinders, but this was like the perfect send-off."
Brandt, the No. 3-ranked wrestler at 197 in Division II, had to work to get the victory, as he fought back against Tiffin's Jake Cramer and clinched a decisive 9-7 decision. Brandt earned his 20th win of the season and stands with a record of 20-2.
At 125, redshirt freshman Sebastian Vidika worked out of an early 6-1 hole and managed to take a 14-9 decision over the Dragons' Giuseppe Penzone. Vidika improved to 11-7 overall and is ranked No. 3 in Super Region II.
Freshman Chandler Minnard (133), ranked fourth in Super Region II, looked dominant against Tiffin's Lawrence Blackful III, posting a 14-0 major decision. Minnard improved his record to 12-7 overall.
Redshirt junior Bobby Mason kept the momentum on the side of the Eagles at 141, defeating Travis Salyer by a narrow 3-1 decision.
At 157, senior Zeb Beam went out with a 5-4 decision over Sam Viengmany. Beam evened up his record at 11-11.
The Eagles will next wrestle on Friday, Feb. 26, at the NCAA Super Region II tournament. The two-day tournament will begin at 10 a.m. on both Friday and Saturday.
