Brandt Wins 99th Match, No. 20 Eagles Downed By Top-Ranked Falcons

The No. 20-ranked Ashland University wrestling team knew the top-ranked Notre Dame College Falcons would be a battle on Wednesday night (Jan. 20).

The Eagles fought hard, but NDC came away a winner, 37-3.

Eagle senior Joe Brandt, ranked No. 3 in the country at 197 pounds, took on NDC's Garrett Lineberger, ranked No. 4. Brandt won the battle, defeating Lineberger by a 3-1 decision. The victory is Brandt's 99th of his career (99-24), just one shy of a major milestone in his collegiate career.

This is the second nationally-ranked opponent Brandt has defeated in five days. On Saturday (Jan. 16), Brandt won by a 3-1 decision over Lake Erie's Evan Rosborough, ranked No. 8 at 197.

Ashland forfeited two matches, 157 and 184, giving the Falcons 12 team points.

The Eagles fall to 2-4 in dual meets this season.

AU will now turn its attention to the Region II Duals in Hartsville, S.C. on Jan. 29-30.
