Ashland University wrestling fans gathered in Findlay, Ohio, on Saturday (Nov. 21) to watch the Eagles compete in the Findlay Open against more than 300 wrestlers from 20 different schools.
Senior Michael Labry (unattached) and redshirt senior Joe Brandt both finished with runner-up performances in their respective weight classes. Brandt (197 pounds) defeated Findlay's Gerald Beck in the semifinals (Dec 2-1) and fell just short in the title match to Ohio State's Kollin Moore (Dec 3-2).
Labry (141) took down AU teammate Bobby Mason in the semifinal match (Dec 8-1), but came up short by a 5-2 decision in the finals to Ohio State's Ke-Shawn Hayes.
Redshirt junior Mason finished third after he came back and won the third-place match by medical forfeit over Notre Dame's Andrew Bannister.
At 165, freshman Christian Price came home in third place after advancing all the way through the bracket to the third-place match. He won by forfeit over Matt Vandermeer of Lake Erie.
Freshman Jerry Fenner III earned a seventh-place finish at 133. Fenner lost his opening round match by a 4-1 decision to Davis Berry of Notre Dame. However, he advanced four rounds through consolation rounds, and won the seventh-place match over Dominic Vagnier of West Liberty University (Maj. 10-2).
The Eagles will be back on the mat on Dec. 10 at home against Pitt-Johnstown. The meet will get underway at 7 p.m.
