Brandt First, Eagles 10th In Division II Preseason Rankings

Ashland University senior Joe Brandt is ranked No. 1 in Division II at 197 pounds in the first 2015-16 D2Wrestle.com individual wrestler rankings, released on Wednesday (Oct. 28).

Brandt, a three-time All-American, returns to mat after a redshirt season. In 2014, he finished a career-best fifth place at nationals.

AU boasts four nationally-ranked wrestlers at their respective weight classes to begin 2015-16. Junior Brent Fickel is ranked sixth at 149 pounds, senior Zeb Beam is eighth at 157 pounds and junior Brandon O'Neill is eighth at 184 pounds.

Fickel earned his first All-American honor in 2015, placing eighth at nationals at 149 pounds. Beam and O'Neill each qualified for D-II nationals for the first time a season ago.

As a team, the Eagles are ranked 10th in the 2015-16 Division II Wrestling Coaches Association Poll. Ashland finished 2015 nationals in 16th place.

Ashland begins the 2015-16 campaign on Sunday, Nov. 15 at the Michigan State Open.
