The Ashland University wrestling team went 3-1 Sunday (Dec. 12) at the Newberry Duals. This was the Eagles' first venture into the dual meet portion of the schedule.
Ashland, ranked 17th in the country, defeated Anderson, 45-3, Limestone, 33-5 and Cumberland, 30-12. AU's loss came to UNC-Pembroke, 27-12. UNC-Pembroke went 3-0 at the Duals and is ranked 20th in the country.
In the match with UNC-Pembroke, Ashland lost the first six matches before senior Brandon Kelley (Fort Myers, Fla./Newberry) picked up a 4-0 win over Dennis Fix at 174 pounds. Kelley is a transfer from Newberry. This is his first season at AU.
Sophomore Ryan Thatcher (Loudonville, Ohio) followed Kelley's victory with a 6-5 triumph over Shiheem Bryant at 184 pounds. Ashland's last points came at 285 where Jacob Southwick (Bowling Green, Ohio/Otsego) pinned Seth Stewart in five minutes.
In the win over Cumberland, Kelley won by major decision, 12-2 over Andrew Madden. That was one of three major decisions AU recorded against the Kentucky school. Thatcher also went that route for a win and 125 pounds, Dan Mandera (Canadaigua, N.Y.) stopped Eddie Ortiz, 17-8.
Ashland also got a pin from Dan Genetin (Navarre, Ohio/Massillon Perry) at 149 pounds. It took Genetin 31 seconds to end his match with Andrew Shoultz. Southwick also won by fall, taking just 20 seconds to send Bradley Rogers back to the bench.
The Eagles will be in Indianapolis for the Midwest Classic this coming weekend, Dec. 18-19.
