No. 1-Ranked Ashland Women Set New WBCA Poll Standard

Ashland University's women's basketball team is one of 20 undefeated squads in NCAA Division II so far in 2017-18.

The Eagles, however, stand alone in one regard – a new Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division II Coaches' Poll record.

  • The new WBCA poll, released on Tuesday (Dec. 5) afternoon, once again has Ashland (8-0 overall, 2-0 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) as the No. 1 team in the country. The Eagles are the top-ranked team in the poll for a 16th consecutive time in the regular season/postseason, breaking the record of 15 previously accomplished by Cal Poly Pomona (Jan. 5, 1985-Feb. 8, 1987) and Bentley (Nov. 19, 2013-April 1, 2014).
  • Ashland is ranked No. 1 in the regular season/postseason for the 28th time, fourth-most in the history of the poll, trailing only North Dakota (37), North Dakota State (33) and Cal Poly Pomona (32).
  • The Eagles are the unanimous top-ranked team in the country for the 20th time, preseason and in-season.
  • Tuesday's poll also is the longest active regular-season/postseason streak for a D-II women's basketball team in the top 5 at 20.
  • Playing as the No. 1-ranked team in the country, both in preseason and in-season polls, the Eagles have an all-time record of 60-1.
  • The official D-II women's basketball poll started in 1982-83.

Ashland will play its first two home GLIAC games of the new season on Thursday (Dec. 7) at 5:30 p.m. vs. Wayne State (6-2, 1-1) and Saturday (Dec. 9) at 1 p.m. vs. Davenport (1-6, 0-2). The Eagles enter the weekend on a 45-game winning streak, third-best in the history of NCAA Division II women's basketball.
