Ashland University senior forward Daiva Gerbec (Dublin, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) is this week's GLIAC South Division women's basketball player of the week. The conference office made the announcement today (Jan. 7).
Gerbec helped the Eagles go 2-0 last week on a trip to Michigan's Upper Peninsula. She scored 18 points last Thursday in a 63-46 win at Northern Michigan. That was the first victory in school history at NMU.
Two days later, Gerbec scored a season-high 27 points in AU's 76-66 triumph at Michigan Tech. For the week, Gerbec averaged 22.5 ppg., 5.5 rpg., and 2.5 spg. This is the first time this season Gerbec has won the conference's weekly award.
On the year, Gerbec is averaging 13.8 ppg., and 7.9 rpg. She is second on the team in scoring and rebounding. In her last six games, Gerbec has averaged 18.0 ppg. She has four double-doubles (points-rebounds) this season. The forward leads the team in field goal percentage (56.6 percent, 82-of-145).
The Eagles are 15-0, 8-0 in GLIAC play. Ashland is ranked first in the country. This week, AU plays at Walsh on Thursday (Jan. 10, 8 p.m.) and at Malone on Saturday (Jan. 12, 3 p.m.).
