It took 16 innings, but Ashland University's Emlyn Knerem has her first collegiate head softball coaching victory.
After a 4-1 loss to William Jewell to open the season on Friday (Feb. 23) morning at the Lewis Dome Invitational in Rosemont, Ill., the Eagles scored six runs in the top of the ninth inning to topple the host Flyers, 10-5.
The extra-inning outburst against home-standing Lewis featured a two-run triple by sophomore third baseman Dayna Denner, as well as single RBI from junior center fielder Erika Farst, junior first baseman Paige Summers, sophomore catcher Cassie Haight and junior right fielder Halle Dorko.
Sophomore Camille Pollutro hit her first collegiate home run, and was 3-for-5 with a double and three runs scored, while Denner was 2-for-4 with a double, triple, two RBIs and two runs scored. Farst, sophomore shortstop Bree Gill and Haight each had two of AU's 14 hits in the victory.
Senior pitcher Paige McMenemy came in for 2 1/3 innings of relief, earning the victory by allowing just a hit, an unearned run and a walk.
In the opener against William Jewell on Friday, Ashland scored a run in the top of the second, but yielded three in the bottom of the third and one in the fourth.
