For the second time in as many years, Ashland University's baseball team has earned the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Team Academic Excellence Award.
In both years of the award, the Eagles have garnered the honor. In 2016-17, Ashland's team cumulative grade-point average was 3.24.
Ashland is one of 34 NCAA Division II teams to earn the 2016-17 distinction, and one of more than 200 programs honored overall.
Criteria for the ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award includes – 1) must be a high school or college team, 2) head coach must be a current ABCA member and 3) team must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 on a 4.0 scale during the 2016-17 academic year. GPA may not be rounded up.
This team award comes on the heels of four Eagles earning Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference All-Academic Excellence Team standing – junior infielder Edmond Pilolli, sophomore first baseman Tyler Seymour, senior catcher Adam Vasil and sophomore outfielder Ivan Wortman – and eight landing on the GLIAC All-Academic Team – junior pitcher Derek Baker, sophomore pitcher Ryan Curtis, senior pitcher Mike Gentile, junior catcher Ryan Lowe, junior first baseman Greg Ludwig, sophomore pitcher Chris Slavik, junior pitcher Luke Smith and junior second baseman J.P. Sorma.
